An Alleged French-US Support to Lebanon, “Israel” Seeks Lessons of 6-year-old July War
Siraj Kobeissy

The Lebanese arena is for sure a tough one, as it can carry along and tackle many packages at the same time. While the government is still seeking its way out of all files, every one at a time, the Lebanese President was getting acquainted with his French counterpart in an official visit to the European country.

At the time when one of Lebanon's heads is in the West, the West on its part, represented by the US, was in Lebanon, to claim total support to Lebanon's sovereignty. It so happens that these stances come as "Israel" is still suffering the repercussions of its six-year-old July aggression on Lebanon.

The major Lebanese dailies highlighted the aforementioned issues in its headlines of Friday's edition.

Suleiman in France with Packages of Western Support to Lebanon

The self-distancing policy that Lebanon has been following regarding the Syrian crisis, was received with a French-US support, this is how as-Safir daily regarded Lebanese President Michel Suleiman's visit to France, and US Under Secretary of State, William Burns' visit to Lebanon.

The daily indicated, according to US officials, that Burns' visit came as part of the constant cooperation and contact between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati. It is derived from the alleged "US interest to keep Lebanon its circle of concern on one hand, and its constant confirmation of Lebanon's stability, sovereignty, and independence on another hand."
Meanwhile, France on its part confirmed its full support to Lebanon and its stability. Also, as-Safir daily reported that the Lebanese President concluded his short visit to France on Thursday night after a meeting with his French counterpart François Hollande at the Élysée Palace, during which the latter asserted France's full support to Lebanon, especially in light of the currents Syrian crisis.

An-Nahar daily on another hand stated that at the end of the meeting, Suleiman stated that Holand is well informed of all the issues discussed; whether regional or bilateral. Also, the Lebanese President noted France's will to remain committed to its role in the UNIFIL in south Lebanon.
Moreover, an-Nahar daily quoted President Suleiman saying that the situation in Lebanon is not heading towards civil war as claimed, believing that the situation is under control. However, Suleiman warned of having the Syrian fire reach Lebanon, had the situation remained as it is.

Furthermore on this level, Suleiman denied allegations of a Free Syrian Army deployment on the Lebanese territories, especially in North Lebanon, and stated, "As long as the Lebanese Army is deployed, there won't be any Syrian military operation in North Lebanon," as-Safir reported.

Government to Tackle Appointments, Piled Files

On the governmental level, an-Nahar daily indicated that Lebanese Prime Minister held talks with Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri, during which the atmosphere of cabinet sessions was highlighted, and cited by Speaker Berri.
In an interview with the daily, Berri referred that "the government is following the plan assigned for it; and there is mutual comfort regarding deciding the budget in the cabinet [...],"stressing that the governmental work should not retreat.

In this context, a Lebanese Minister informed as-Safir daily that the government is preparing to tackle files that have been postponed for a while; among which are the electoral law, appointments, and oil committee appointments.
On this level, sources circulating Lebanese PM Mikati said that the appointments are expected to see light starting next week, as a package of appointments will be issued per weekly cabinet session.
Furthermore, on the oil and energy file, sources indicated to as-Safir daily the consensus reached between President Suleiman, PM Mikati, and Water and Energy Minister Gibran Bassil, to accelerate the appointment of the oil committee, followed by authorizing companies willing to invest in this sector.

More on this level, Bassil stated in an interview with as-Safir daily, "We have adopted a mechanism regarding the candidates for the positions in this committee; i.e. choosing three names for each position [there are currently 18 candidates for six positions]." Bassil asserted that the candidates are of a high efficiency, and therefore these appointments should be passed by the cabinet as soon as possible.

Six Years on "Israeli" Aggression, Enemy Blunders in July War Lessons

As the half of July approached with memories of the 6-year-old "Israeli" aggression on Lebanon; which Lebanon survived victoriously, as-Safir noted how "Israel" is still reviewing its political and military retreat, and trying to extract lessons from its defeat.
On this level, as-Safir daily calrified that the so-called "National Security Studies Center" at the Tel Aviv University convened a whole-day seminar to discuss the lessons of "Lebanon's Second War".

The major stance of the seminar was, according to the Lebanese daily, former "Israeli" Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, who then gave the order to launch the July 2006 war.
Olmert on this level announced that "Lebanon's second war did not start on July 12, 2006, but started the day "Israel" promised to demolish the Lebanese territories in response to capturing its soldiers. He also stressed that the war on Lebanon started the moment "Israel" lost its deterring force; as it followed the "response" and not the "initiating" method.
