US officials revealed that the Pentagon is working on building an anti-missile radar system in a covert location in Qatar, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Also, the Pentagon is also planning to hold the biggest-ever maneuvers in the Gulf in September, calling them the "first such multilateral drills in the region", as part of preparing for a potential war with Iran.
The officials clarified that the radar system comes to complete the system designed to defend the US interests, and those of its allies, like "Israel" and some European countries, against the Iranian missiles.
Regarding the site the Pentagon decided to install the system, the Wall Street Journal indicated that Qatar has always embraced the biggest US military base in the region; containing more than 8 thousand brigades.
Furthermore, the US officials explained that the radar station, X-Band, comes complimentary to similar radars existing on Mount Keren in the Negev Desert, and another installed in Turkey; as part of the NATO anti-missile shield.
According to the sources, these three radars combined represent an arc that could intercept any missile attack from North, South, or West Iran. The station will always be equipped with anti-missile batteries deployed in the area and aboard the US ships. The X-Band radar presents images that allow intercepting the missile while still in air, the sources added.
It's worth mentioning that the Pentagon informed the Congress that building the station in Qatar will continue this month, and will cost $12.2 million for building the radar platform, roads, barracks, and security measures in the site.
