Al-Asir’s Sit-In to be Contained, Saida on Strike Monday, Tripoli Witnesses Clashes
Siraj Kobeissy

Lebanon's security is like a see-saw; once up and once down, and once stable and settled in a civilized manner. With security ups and downs, Lebanon's other sectors are affected by the repercussions of the situation.

However; Lebanon always comes out of any situation more powerful and steadfast, and ready to conquer all challenges.

Saida's Security, Economy at Risk

As-Safir daily highlighted the security situation, especially regarding the alleged sit-in in Saida, organized by the Salafist Sheikh Ahmad al-Asir. His sit-in was not very calm, as riots erupted on Friday, causing the outrage of high-ranking Saida figures, and that of the people who are concerned with the future of their city.

On this level, a public strike is organized to be held on Monday morning in the city of Saida, to protest al-Asir's movement. According to as-Safir daily, MP Bahiya Hariri, Head of Popular Nasserite Organization Osama Saad, and former Head of Saida's Municipality Abdul Rahman al-Bizri, decided to join the call for a general strike.

Sources from the city expressed that the tension witnessed in Saida on Tuesday between the Salafists and al-Asir's supporters, pushed MP Hariri to conduct calls with the city's political figures, despite political disputes, out of fear that Saida would be divided, al-Akhbar daily stated.
The daily added, according to sources, that what ignited the fears was the presence of a great number of Palestinians and Syrians among al-Asir's supporters; who are harder to control.

Moreover, sources from Saida noted the daily "economic fears" circulating around the city's merchandisers, as they have lost many customers due to the unhealthy security status in the city.
On his part, Lebanese Interior Minister, Charbel Nahhas, confirmed that he will discuss the "tough" Saida situation in the cabinet sessions assigned for next Monday. In an interview with al-Liwaa daily, Charbel stated that the branched security board decided to contain al-Asir's sit-in in its current site, and prevent it from expanding to the coastal road.

Tripoli Faces Clashes... Again

Also on the security level, clashes erupted between al-Qiba and Jabal Mohsen residents on Friday night, and expanded until midnight, while the Lebanese Army was not able to control the situation on ground.

As-Safir daily reported, according to security sources, that at 7:30 pm Friday, the clashes erupted due to an individual dispute which escalated to become highly armed clashes.

Berri, Aoun to Agree on EDL Contract Workers' Dilemma

On the social and livelihood level, sources concerned with the Electricité du Liban (EDL) contract workers' dilemma told al-Nahar daily that the political contact is ongoing in order to bring together the points of view between Lebanese Speaker Berri, and Head of Change and Reform Bloc MP Michel Aoun. The sources believed that discussions have overcome a great deal in phrasing a solution for the contract workers.
Sources added that the sought solution guarantees the state's interest, and will be announced on Monday.

Also, the (EDL) headquarter witnessed an interesting development, as sources from the follow up committee stated that a group of people secretively took away the receipts of the collectors, which led to an outrage among the workers; therefore calling for a wide strike on Monday.

Electricity from Iran to Lebanon

In another context, in a step that reflects implementation of the electricity agreement between Lebanon and Iran, the Iranian Energy Ministry and the Syrian Electricity Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding, stating that Iran will export electricity to Syria and Lebanon, starting August 10.

The Syrian side believed that buying electricity from Iran via Iraqi territories, and transferring it to Lebanon, would be done in two stages. According to the agreement, 30 megawatts will be transferred, and then 50% of the said will be transferred to Lebanon; all this in the first stage.
As for the second stage, 200 megawatts of electricity will be transferred via a 400 kilovolt card line; of which 100 megawatts will be transferred to Lebanon.
