Polls Open in Iran Parliament Election
Source: Alalam TV, 14-03-2008
TEHRAN--Polls opened on Friday for Iran's eighth parliamentary elections since the Islamic Revolution, amid hopes they will send a message of unity to Western enemies in the face of mounting pressures over the country's nuclear program.
Polls were to close at 6:00 p.m. (1430 GMT), although the hours will be extended if there is heavy turnout.
Top officials and state media have emphasized on the importance of a massive turnout to show national unity.
Iranians will take part in the elections more gloriously than the past and will thwart plots of bullying powers to undermine the Islamic system," said Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a speech.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Soleimani has said that all preparations have been made for holding precise and fair Majlis (parliament) elections, according to IRNA.
The minister has said that the current status of the Islamic country is contrary to the wishes of the global arrogance, adding that massive turnout in tomorrow elections will disappoint them.
Results are not expected in the immediate aftermath of the vote, with officials saying they should be ready by the New Year holidays which start on March 20.
Four main coalitions have emerged from an array of factions that make up Iran's political scene.
Conservatives have split into "Broad" and "Unified" factions.
Reformists are represented by a coalition inspired by the slightly more centrist Etemad-e Melli (National Confidence) party.
Candidates can stand for more than one list and the majority of conservative candidates for the 290-seat parliament are standing on both the "Broad" and "Unified" lists.
"Tomorrow is the day of hope for change," said the headline in Etemad-e Melli's newspaper of the same name.
"I'll for sure vote and will take all my family too," said Nazanin Kashani, 23, a female radiologist.
Compared with other chambers in the region, the Iranian parliament wields a respectable amount of power.
Parliament's legislation must be approved by the Guardians Council.
